THE WOMAN I WANTED TO BE

THE WOMAN I WANTED TO BE

Hi everyone!
Hope you have had a wonderful week so far. Today, I feel like sharing something very personal with you and I'd like to dedicate this blog entry to one woman who I truly admire (although, she might not even read this blog entry).

Last week, I was so fortunate to be invited to a fashion talk with Diane von Furstenberg and to attend her fashion show during Singapore Fashion Week. I wore her signature wrap dress and a flirty clutch to Diane's show. During a one-hour talk, Diane shared with us a story of her life, how she started her business alone in America and how the wrap dress changed her life. She was so real, humorous and friendly that she made me feel as if my mother was sharing a story with me. Diane shared how the power of social networks changed the fashion industry, but also emphasized "social networking can be so powerful but in the end, we don't sell numbers, we sell clothes, bags, the quality, and the confidence of our brand". She continued "Everybody has their own brand. It's how you want to represent it".

Having tried to build Crystal Phuong as my brand as long (and much) as I could, I can not agree with her more. I sat still and swallowed every single word she said for one precious hour. I was moved, inspired, and deeply motivated that I almost shed a tear. I can relate to her story so much as it is so similar to mine. She went to a foreign land with her big dream, started from scratch to make it come true. As for me, I left Vietnam to study and work in Malaysia for five years, at the age of 20 (thanks to my scholarship). I worked both day and night job tirelessly to support myself financially. Then, I moved to Singapore with empty hands. I went through all the hardship and started all over again. Most of you may not know that I don't come from a wealthy family. My parents could never afford to buy me expensive presents or dresses when I was little. I was brought up that If I wanted something, I had to work hard for it.

Today, looking back during the 11 year- journey in foreign lands, I'm happy and proud of what I've achieved and gone through (both success and challenges). I always feel so grateful for people that I met, beautiful souls that lifted me up during my hard time.  Never a single day do I stop thinking of my dream and how to turn it into reality. Many times, it makes me frustrated and vulnerable to feel that I'm nowhere near my goals, I'm nobody, and I have no significant accomplishment in my life. But when I heard Diane said last week "Being vulnerable is OK", it was truly like a pat on my back and kept me going.

At this point in my life, I am in the same situation as Diane was when she was 26. I don't know what I want to do, but I know exactly the woman I want to become. I want to lead my own life, have my own money, support myself and my family- not the type of woman who just sits there and waits for a man to feed her. A woman who is happy, effortless, capable, independent, and most importantly, kind. That's the woman I want to be.

"You don't have to be a b**ch to be successful"- said my true inspiration, Diane von Furstenberg.

Have you ever thought of what woman you want to be?

{SGFW}: DIANE von FURSTENBERG FALL 2015

{SGFW}: DIANE von FURSTENBERG FALL 2015

Last Wednesday, Singapore Fashion Week began on a very seductive note with the opening show of the well-known Belgian- American fashion designer, Diane von Furstenberg (DVF).

Naming the collection as "Seduction", Diane introduced us to a powerful woman who lives her life like a double agent. "She can go to a board meeting and wear a pinstripe dress with a little chiffon pinstripe and then, at night, she can inspire fantasy". That message was clearly sent to us through the 37 designs in her Fall collection. There are masculine electric blue suits and jersey wrap dresses for a woman at work. Then, there are cut-outs, with plunging v-neck, and sensuous lace and scarlet satin materials for a woman at night. According to Diane: "Seduction is like a mystery. Lace is a mystery. And to mix the lace and the masculine is like tongue and cheek. It's like Yin and Yang. And that's fun to be a woman".

I have never felt so strongly inspired and moved while watching a collection on the runway before. I was so fortunate to be able to watch my favorite designer's show up close and I finally found the woman who I wanted to be. She is a DVF woman. She is fun, chic, effortless, strong, powerful, and of course, seductive.

Diane has successfully seduced all of us, from the beautiful collection on the runway to the lace wallpaper on the stage. Especially with the song "Earned it" playing continuously, a soundtrack from the most talked-about movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, there wasn't anything more seductive than that.

GRID GIRL

GRID GIRL

If I remember correctly, this will be my first time wearing grids. I've worn stripes many times before, put on tartan on a few occasions, but honestly, never thought of trying on grids. This 60s vibe printed pattern is more versatile than I imagined. It can look classy and chic for some people and can be quite edgy and bold for others. Because the boxy prints (especially in a jumpsuit) might make me look bigger than my actual size, I usually lean toward any garment pieces that have a flattering silhouette to create a slimming effect. This grid jumpsuit with a bustier top and wide-leg bottoms is an example.

I wore this statement piece to attend RueMadame Grand Opening party last Friday night. As I had to work during the day, I wanted to find an outfit that could take me from day to night without having to worry so much about an inappropriate attire. The long black vest, thus, became a life saver.  When I was in the office or out for a meeting, I threw a belt over a blazer to accentuate my waist and also to cover up my bustier top. At night, I buttoned up the vest, pulled it at the back to leave the attention on the grid jumpsuit. If you have a petite and curvy body, it's always better to show your body shape when wearing an over-sized outerwear so that it doesn't look like you are "eaten" up by your outfit.

I didn't know that I would like to wear grids that much before, but after the first attempt, I think I appreciated it more.
Have you ever tried this trend before? What are your thoughts?

BEIGE WITH ORANGE

BEIGE WITH ORANGE

Monday here again and it calls for another work outfit. But instead of wearing a typical black and white ensemble, I encourage you to wear something more fun and bold like beige and orange. Beige is such a tricky color to wear. Like some people, I used to be afraid of beige colored outfits as I thought they didn't compliment my skin tone. Over time, I learned how to mix and match different colors and textures. I started falling in love with this "dull" color even more. In my humble opinion, beige is the most versatile color that we should have in our closet. Be it a beige dress, skirt, pants, or blazer, this color is so timeless that it will never go out of style.

There are a few different shades of beige that you need to be aware of if you are thinking of putting it on. I love all of them, but I'm currently obsessed with a light and creamy beige shade. It brightens my skin tone, goes well with warm colors, and creates a refreshing look. I've been hunting for a great pair of wide-leg pants in beige color for a while and haven't found anything that I truly liked. Until last weekend, when I dropped by a Zara store to check out their new collection, I saw my favorite pants on the rack. My heart screamed of happiness. As usual, a window shopping session always ends up with leaving a store with big bags and a satisfying smile.

Now that a big problem is solved, another happy problem is to find "What to wear with beige pants?". I'll be styling my new favorite pants with a few different wardrobe staples in the next coming blog posts, but I guess an orange bow chiffon blouse would work for now.

Do you have an obsession with beige outfits like I do? How do you wear them?

PASTEL AND LALANG

PASTEL AND LALANG

If you have been following my Crystal's Closet blog series, you can easily tell that I'm a colors-addict. I love experimenting with different hues to my everyday outfit. More often than not, the colors I wear represent how I feel on that particular day. When I like feel like in a business mode, I'll opt for black and white. When I'm out for fun and feeling energized, I'll go for vibrant colors. If I'm wearing pastel outfits, that usually means I'm in a "Keep Calm and Stay Cool" situation.

It's Friday today. Everyone should wind down and celebrate whatever we have achieved this week, shouldn't we? Typically on Friday or the weekend, I like wearing denim jeans and a loose shirt. I've worn this style many times here, here, and here, but never get tired of them. I love how the tight bottom, balanced with the loose top, creates a sexy-and-chill vibe. At the same time, the light yellow and turquoise color combo also helps to calm the sunny afternoon down.

I wore this outfit to my hair salon last Sunday for a hair touch-up. I've been going to Artisan Hair Salon for a year, for all my hair needs but didn't know there is such a beautiful small lalang field right behind the salon.
Speaking of lalang (scientific name is Imperata cylindrica), it reminded me of my childhood and how fun it was to play hide and seek with other kids in a big lalang field. I didn't have the chance to see, touch, and feel the lalang grass since I grew up. But that sweet memory always follows me wherever I go. That's why I was so surprised and excited to see lalang at the most unexpected place, in the heart of Singapore.

I hope the lalang grass field background and my pastel outfit brighten up your day, just like how they brightened mine. Happy Friday!
