{TRAVEL}: DEAR DUBAI

{TRAVEL}: DEAR DUBAI

Two weeks ago, I went to Dubai for holiday. I know, you will probably ask me exactly same question like many of my friends did: "Why Dubai?". The truth is I have a friend who used to live in Dubai 4 years ago and is now residing there again, he has been asking me many times to visit the city just for once. After one year, I finally agreed to travel just to see how Dubai looked like.

As a newbie to the United Arab Emirates, I had no idea whether the city would fit my liking or would be safe for a girl to travel to alone. I didn't even know what to pack for Dubai which I previously shared about it with you in the Fit and Flare blog post. Knowing my concern and worry, my friend had arranged everything to make sure I would have the best and most memorable stay in Dubai.

Right after I got out of the airplane, there was a guy from Marhaba agency waiting for me with my name written on a white board.  He escorted me to the fast immigration check-in row and security screening, helped to claim my luggage and took me to my Limousine car outside the airport. Easy peasy! My first impression on Dubai? "Man, this is fun! I think I liked it already". Now, here is an advice for you. If you travel to Dubai for the first time, make sure you book Meet and Greet Airport Assistance beforehand. This will make your life so much easier as Dubai airport is really big, confusing and crowded. Getting an airport assistance will save so much time and troubles from waiting 2-3hours just to clear immigration, trust me!

This was the view that I woke up to every morning when I was there. It's such a peaceful, beautiful and tempting view. After breakfast, my friend took me for a ride to explore the city. All I saw were buildings and buildings, one after another standing next to each other creating a beautiful city skyline. The sky was clear, temperature was just right. Everything seemed to be trying to show me their best.

Took a photo with an empty street in the afternoon.

and visited Victoria Secret's store thereafter.

Beautiful sunset view from my room.

Believe it or not, it was around 7pm when I took this photo. It didn't look like the evening was approaching, did it?
At night, my friend made a reservation for us to dine at At.mosphere restaurant located on 122th floor of Burj Khalifa, also known as The tallest Building in the world. He just wanted to amaze me with many wonderful things, I knew and really appreciated him.

While dining, we got to enjoy this spectacular view of Dubai city at night.

I always lost my words whenever I looked at the scenery like this. There was a mixture of proud, happy, empowering and conquering feeling altogether. I never thought that I would be able to stand at the top of the tallest building in the world one day. Never!

The dinner was fantastic! Great food, hilarious conversation, wonderful view and ambience, there was literally, nothing I could ask for more. My first day in Dubai ended on a very high note just like that and it broke all my worries about Dubai completely. I knew that all I needed to do was to relax and to enjoy myself as much as possible.

Day 2 in Dubai started very early at 7am with a breakfast at the most luxurious hotel in the world- Burj Al Arab hotel.

At 321 m (1,053 ft), it is the fourth tallest hotel in the world, however 39% of its total height is made up of non-occupiable space. Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island 280 m (920 ft) from Jumeirahbeach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to mimic the sail of a ship. *According to Wikipedia

A long escalator with huge fish tanks on both sides for walls to get to the reception area was the first thing that guests would experience. But that's not all yet, this was just the beginning of what Burj Al Arab hotel had to offer.

From the 180 meters high atrium, the exclusive 24-carat gold iPad offered to every guest upon check-in,  gold-plated lifts, to the 24 meter (79 feet) wide helipad projects from the building 210 meters above the ground and the luxury Hermes bathroom amenities, everything was an eyes-and-ears opening experience for me.

Having a breakfast in a luxury hotel like that was truly a dream-come-true.

We had a short walk outside the hotel after breakfast and had some photos taken. Early in the morning but It was already so hot and sunny, I couldn't stay outdoor for long. We drove to the next tourist attraction which was not very far from Burj Al Arab.

Right here at Souk Madinat Jumeirah, I found everything I needed: indoor air-conditioned Arabian market with lot of shops, restaurants and outdoor beautiful architect with green water, blue sky made a perfect picturesque view.

From the outside to the inside, every where was filled with rich and vibrant Arabian spirit and culture. With fashion, jewelry, antiques, furniture, art, oils and spices and many more, this market had endless things to entertain me throughout the day.

I lost track of time while having myself "dived" into the colorful Arabian treasures,  the further I walked, the more things I found.

Time always goes by so quickly when you travel. When I found myself enjoying the most, it's time I had to leave Souk Madinat Jumeirah for other places before my dinner. We drove to WAFI Mall, also well-known as the best shopping mall for luxury shopping at affordable prices.

Found her while I was walking around the Wafi Mall, I asked her if we could take a photo together, she said: "Yes" and this was what happened!

Even the ceiling looked fascinating to me! Influenced by many architectural styles, from Egyptian to Turkish, the mall is dominated by its modern interpretation of the Pharaohs, whose epic splendor is conveyed through exquisite stained glass, intricate mosaics, carvings and sculptures. *According to Wafi Mall.

Everything is such a beautiful piece of art.

Tea time with strawberry, yogurt and ice-cream followed by mango and raspberry drink few hours later while looking at Dubai street, my day 2 in Dubai was absolutely wonderful beyond expectation.

I thought my days in Dubai couldn't get better than this but I was wrong as day 3 was even better than day 1 and 2. And because people always say "Save the best for last" so I thought, I should reserve a full dedicated post (with many photos, of course) for day 3 in a separate entry.

This blog entry is, indeed quite overwhelming.

Thank you so much for reading, everyone.

{COLLABORATION}: FALL FOR COLOR-BLOCK

{COLLABORATION}: FALL FOR COLOR-BLOCK

I wrote many blog posts about Color-blocking styles before in this blog yet still felt like I have many things to talk about. It's so fun to play with different colors and pair them up together to create an entire new refreshing look. We often see more color-blocking outfits on the street or runway during Summer but do you know that Color-block can be worn in Fall too? I know Fall is all about dark colors and heavier fabrics but that doesn't mean we can't have fun with brighter hues and bolder shades, can we? That's exactly what I thought when I stepped into GAP store and saw their latest Fall/ Winter collection with lot of bold prints and playful pops of colors. I had really hard time to find my most favorite 2 items for the second look as I loved everything in the store #myusualproblem (My first look in collaboration with GAP was this FEEL THE GAP outfit).

At last, I decided to "match-make" the red fitted boyfriend polkadot shirt with the purple 1969 real straight cord jeans to come up with this smart-casual chic look that you are seeing here.

There are few things about this fitted boyfriend shirt that I love. Besides the 100% cotton material, I love any shirt that is slim fit with tailored silhouette. It's loose enough to dress down for a shopping, brunch with friends but fitted enough to create an appropriate outfit for work, meeting etc... The polka dots print with a hint of pink is just so adorable and fun.

Talking about the pants, I had my first corduroy pants when I was 6 years old, my mom bought for me during Chinese New Year. She is a true corduroy fan. Because of her, most of my dress, jeans were in corduroy fabric. Growing up, I slowly realized that I started loving corduroy as much as she did. When I saw these adorable corduroy pants in GAP store, I felt so excited as if I just met my childhood friend after a long time. I knew I just had to talk about "her" on my blog.

If you've never worn cords pants before, I suggest you should give it a try. They fit perfectly around my hips and waist, compliment my body shape yet still give me the comfort all day long. Unlike some other types of pants, or jeans, if they fit, they are not comfortable and you'll always be struggling in between Style vs. Comfort.

This Fall, give your denim jeans, leather pants a break and try something new with this cords pants from GAP, add some fun and vibrant colors to a gloomy day with color-blocking. Sometimes, I do like putting on my favorite leather biker jacket for an edgier look and to keep me warm at night, other than that I'm good to go.

Thank you so much for reading!

{CRYSTAL'S CLOSET}: FIT AND FLARE

Happy Tuesday everyone!

It has been a week since I came back Singapore but my mind and heart are still with Dubai. The vibrant city, beautiful architecture, blue sky, turquoise water and great food, there isn't anything about Dubai that I don't like except for...the heat. But no matter how hot it is, I know I will still be happy to visit this city again and again whenever I have chance. Thank to my friend who arranged everything so perfectly for me and took me to visit the most luxurious and famous places in Dubai. I had breakfast at Burj Al Arab hotel, the only 7 star hotel in the world, visited Jumeirah beach and went shopping Souk Madinat Jumeirah market. It was truly enjoyable and memorable trip.

I'm editing 400 photos from this trip and I can't wait to share them with you. Meanwhile, take a look at what I wore in Dubai.

Two days before my flight, I did some researches on internet about "What to wear in Dubai?" as I did not want to dress-up inappropriately and disrespectfully in public. I was struggling to find what to pack as most of my cloths for summer are either short shorts, tank-tops, tight dresses or skinny jeans. How could I wear jacket, jeans all day long under 38 degree Celsius temperature? At last, I decided to pack some of my most basic staples with me and prepared to buy more cloths there if needed.

Surprisingly enough, I didn't have to buy any cloth when I was there and I knew that I was worried too much. I could, literally dress up like how I normally do except for NO midriff tops, no low plunging necklines, no low rise jeans or mini-skirts. I didn't want to be too sexy when traveling anyway so that wasn't an issue. But I believe, there will be many people (perhaps) like me who are first time Dubai-visitors and wondering about traveling attires, so some tips below would be helpful for you:

What can you wear in public:
1. Short/ long sleeves shirts, T-shirts. Choose the one with linen or cotton material as they are cool and absorbent, perfect for hot weather.
2. Knee-length shorts or skirts.
3. Sleeves dresses. I bought 3 dresses. 2 casual dresses for daytime out and about and 1 for dinner at fine dining restaurant that required formal dress code.
4. Jeans, pants.
5. Maxi skirts or dresses.
6. Normal bikinis (only in the swimming pool and beach area).

What you shouldn't wear in public:
1. Tank tops, spaghetti straps, singlets.
2. Midriff tops, plunging necklines, bare back, see though clothing.
3. Mini skirts or shorts.
4. Tight dresses
5. Low rise jeans.
6. Anything that shows your cleavage, bellybutton and too much skin.

Hope this helps a little with your planning and packing for Dubai. If you still not sure what you want to wear, get my look here:

{COLLABORATION}: FEEL THE GAP!

{COLLABORATION}: FEEL THE GAP!

Neither as thick as coat nor quite structured and formal as blazer, cardigan is everything in between of the two Fall- Winter staples. It is a transitioning piece from day to night that is so soft, cozy, versatile and warm. You can pair them with almost every other item in your closet: from tank-top to shirt, blazer to coat, pants to denim jeans, or from skirt or dress. Because of its versatility, cardigan is considered an ultimate layering piece that can be worn at any time, in any place and for any occasion. This is also one of my most favorite staples for Fall and Winter.

I own many cardigans but there is no one quite like the Eversoft Striped Cardigan from GAP that I wore for this outfit post. It is the softest wash-and-wear cashmere cardigan, incredibly lightweight and so chic. Even though I was so overwhelmed by many amazing items displayed in GAP store, I could easily notice this sweet, girly cardigan from the very first moment I walked in the shop. It called my name, loud and clear!

While other people often wear cardigan with tank-top and jeans for casual look, I love layering this tunic cardigan with a dress and accentuating my waist with a belt to finish the look. It would be a perfect outfit for a date this Fall, wouldn't it?

You can probably tell from this outfit that I'm the type of girl who loves everything that is sweet, romantic and lovely. Just like what fashion designer Rachel Zoe said "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak", I guess it would be redundant for me to say more about who I am.

I'm ending this blog entry with a BIG thank to GAP and AKQA team for helping me to pick up my favorite items in the store and arranging everything for me. This blog post marks my very first collaboration with GAP for their Styld.by project and I couldn't be more proud to say I'm officially a GAP girl right now!

Stay tuned for more outfit posts sponsored by GAP on this blog!

Thank you so much for reading!

{CRYSTAL'S CLOSET}: POISON IVY

Greetings from Dubai, everyone!

I still can't believe that I'm here right now in Dubai writing this blog post. I've never put Dubai in my must-visit places list and never thought that I would have chance to visit this country before. Ever! Who knew that I would finally make it here!

I thought I wouldn't like the city so much but surprisingly enough, I loved what I've seen so far and I started feeling really excited about what I will be experiencing tomorrow and days after. I had a quick shopping trip to The Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates, visited the Palm Jumeirah and went for a car ride around town today. I'll be visiting Burj Khalifa and some other places tomorrow. I can't wait to share with you more about Dubai in one of the travel blog entries after the trip. Meanwhile, many photos have already posted on my Instagram and Facebook, please do follow me to check'em out!

Back to our typical outfit post, this is what I wore last Wednesday to attend Fide Fashion Week. When I first saw this green shorts suit in ZARA store, I completely fell in love with it. Shorts can be tricky and a bit inappropriate at work but a shorts suit? I don't think so. Shorts suits with a pair of high heels are perfect for creating a polished and sophisticated without being too dressy. Also, the green color of this shorts suit is an unusual thing that you don't see it very often on the street, it reminds me of a fiction character called "Poison Ivy". To me, it's a statement piece that makes me instantly feel so classy the moment I wear it on. It's an effortlessly chic style that needs minimal accessories to go along with it
