SHALL WE DANCE 2ND ANNIVERSARY PARTY

SHALL WE DANCE 2ND ANNIVERSARY PARTY

It took a couple of months preparing for an anniversary. I'm so happy we made it happen and it was a biggest party I've ever co-organised. There were almost 200 guests attended. We rented a big ballroom hall for this event, order food catering for over 200 people, had many dance performances throughout the night.

I was so happy and pleased with my students' dance performance. They did so well. There was no mistake. Everyone looked so beautiful and most importantly happy.
You may think a 3-minute dance performance is an easy task, but you think of training someone from not knowing how to dance at all to performing in front of 200 people, it sounds like a daunting task. It took me 6 months to get to that point. I had 20 students all together to train for a 20 minute dance show. You can do the math.

We practiced 3- 4 days a week for 3 months prior to the party. I had to thank my students for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm on this performance and the party. There were many days they had to practice until midnight just to bring to you a very short 3 minute performance each. On behalf of the studio, I deeply appreciate you all because without you, we couldn't have this success.

The party was successful not only because of performances, but also the behind-the-scene work from video-recording to decoration, from the photo shooting to backdrop, invitation design. Every detail counts. So once again, I just want to capture the beautiful moments that we had and make sure we will never forget this big event and motivate us for the future ones.

The beautiful backdrop was a great job of Randy (Ivy's brother in law). Excellent!!!

Ivy was helping students to make up.... We stayed there since 11am to prepare all these... I was exhausted.

Three sisters in a family... Believe or not??? :)

Our pretty receptionists.

The food

The dance performances

Aren't they cute????

Ivy kicked start the party with a "Thank you" speech: "I'm shaking now", she said.  In fact, she looked elegant and great on that day...

My students and their dance performance, inspired by the movie "Shall We Dance". I'm so proud of this group.

Mr. "John Clark" was feeling down and lost

until he saw us dancing.

The teacher invited him to join the class. This changed him forever.

I really loved the time working on this performance with my students. I choreographed, cut and edit the music, chose the outfit for them. It was a long process, but looking at how much they enjoyed their dance on the dance floor, it made all my late nights worth it.

This was a 20min dance performance, with each group performed 3-4 mins show each part. Somehow, I managed to connect every dance performance through a transition, costume and music change. It was so fun.

The finale where the teacher closed the dance show.

Where each couple ended up standing in line, how many steps they needed to get there. It was all calculated. There was no room for mistakes here.

My last 2 dance performances of the night, ending our 2nd anniversary party on a high note.

My hands were shaking. Thankfully, no accident happened.

The host and the MC of the night

Our very loyal students.

Our professional photographer who took so many nice photos you've seen...Deeply appreciate and thanks to JamesQ. Random photos:

Everybody had a great time that night. It was a success.

Maybe not everyone.

"We are family"
These are all what we had on the anniversary. There are many more photos (around 700 photos) but I couldn't post them up here.
Once again, thank you so much for your great effort during the party. Till we meet again many more coming parties in front.

SURPRISED BIRTHDAY GIFT

SURPRISED BIRTHDAY GIFT

I don't remember when was the last time someone bought me a bouquet of flowers

But what a surprise! It's really BIG surprise to me that someone gave me a bunch of roses, the type of rose I like the most. Honestly, this is the second time I've received flowers. The first time was when my partner gave me a bouquet of lilies to thank me for partnering with him for his dance performance.

I got into his car but didn't notice anything strange. He covered the roses by his shirt and asked me not to put my bag on it. I was wondering what's wrong with him today? Why he is acting weird? But then, after he asked me to hang up the shirt, I saw a rose bouquet and I still asked "Whose these roses for?" I was so surprised and happy to know he bought this for my birthday.

Thank for the sweet surprise, my dear!

LETTER TO DAD

LETTER TO DAD

Dear Dad,

Today, the whole world is celebrating Father's Day but you probably don't know. I miss you so much. Looking at my friends who are celebrating and giving best wishes to their fathers, i'm jealous and sad because this time, nobody gives any wish to my Dad (I don't know whether my brother knows anything about Father's Day since this day is not known in Vietnam).

Each time, missing your daughter, You only can only look at a small photo in your tiny mobile. You won't be able to read this letter, but I still want to write it anyway.

If only I were at home now, I would wash your hair, give you a massage, cook a good meal for you. I love hugging you and kissing on your cheeks even now I'm no longer a 5 or 10 years old little girl. I still remember every single memory we had. The first day I entered school, learning how to write first letter in alphabet, Mom was busy at work, you took a day off from your work to stay home just to teach me how to write nicely. Until now, if there is anyone gives me compliment about my handwriting, I feel thankful and proud of it so much.

I miss the time you stayed up whole night to help me answer my math homework and woke me up at 3am just to explain to me the answer. And the time I first had my period, you advised me what to do to protect and to take care of myself. I also remember your tears at the airport when you waited so long to see me walk out the Arrival hall. You were fearful of bad things might happen to me.

Now, I've grown up, I can survive on my own. I can go out to teach people, but to you, I'm forever your little girl. You always respect my thinking, talk to me as a friend regarding any important matters in our family. You made and taught me to be a strong, independent and smart woman and I really thank you for that.

Dad, but you know, living alone in overseas is not easy, especially for a young girl. I've encountered many problems throughout these years when I'm far away from you. Many times, I swallowed my tears and dealt with all the problems alone. I didn't want to tell you because I know you wouldn't be able to sleep. I didn't want you to worry about me.

On the occasion of Father's Day, I only want to wish you a good health and stay happy always. You look younger and more handsome when you are happy, you know that?

Happiness is shining through your eyes, i can see it. I will try to make you happy always, I promise. And you, please don't ever cry when you feel miss me so much.

I'm going to call you later when I finish writing this letter to you.

I love you!..

TIME WILL TELL

TIME WILL TELL

Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived; Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including love.

One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave. Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment. When the island was almost totally sunk, Love decided it was time to leave. She began looking for someone to ask for help.

Right then Wealth was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, "Richness, Can I come with you on your boat?" Wealth answered, " I'm sorry, but there are a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere."

Then, Love asked Vanity for help who was passing in a beautiful vessel.
Love cried out, "Vanity, help me please!"

"I can't help you", Vanity said, "You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat."

Next, Love saw Sadness passing by.
Love asked, "Sadness, can I go with you?"
Sadness answered, "Love, I'm sorry, but, I just need to be alone now."

Then, Love saw Happiness.
Love cried out, " Happiness, please take me with you!"
But Happiness was so overjoyed that he didn't hear Love calling to him. Love began to cry.

Then, she heard a voice say, "Come Love, I will take you with me." It was from an elderly person with beautiful white hair. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she forgot to ask what is his name. When they arrived on land he went on his way. Love realised how much she owed the unknown helper.
Love then found Knowledge and asked, "Who was it that helped me?"
"It was Time", Knowledge answered.
"But why did Time help me when no one else would?", Love asked.

Knowledge smiled and answered "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

2007 NEW YEAR IN KUANTAN

2007 NEW YEAR IN KUANTAN

I felt so lazy. I opened my blog a few times, but didn't feel like writing a new post at all. It seems all of my friends are busy with their New Year celebrations, and I'm alone in my room. I miss my family. I couldn't go home to celebrate Chinese New Year with the family this year because I couldn't afford a flight ticket. I didn't want to ask my parents for money as I knew, they already had so many things to buy for the house during the New Year already.

I spent 1 week at my friend's house in Kuantan to celebrate Chinese New Year with her and her family. It was a great time for me as I felt like staying in my own house. Everyone in the family was so friendly that made me feel really comfortable. I went to visit their relatives, helped them organise a BBQ party, we went to the beach near their house and went to the temple to pray for luck.

Especially, I had a chance to meet up a few Vietnamese girls who got married here with Malaysian men. They are really happy. This New Year, I received a few ang pows (lucky money) from some people that I didn't know them before at all. What a good luck to start a new year! And here are some photos that I want to share with u on that day I went to the beach and temple with my friend's family.

Sometimes, I realise happiness comes from small simple things. What about your New Year celebration, did you have a good one?

HOLIDAY IN VIETNAM

HOLIDAY IN VIETNAM

Time flies so fast! My semester break ended 2 days ago, I still like I only had 1 week of semester break. I spent my semester holiday in Vietnam with my family and friends. It was a really good time for me to refresh my mind and my heart after such a long time with hard work and study.

Almost 2 years living far away from home, this 3 week holiday was what I needed. The only thing I hate is the winter weather. It was so cold in Hanoi, so I spent many days at home instead of going out.

Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi in the morning

So you want to know, what did I do in Vietnam and how did I enjoy my holiday?

The first week, I was busy to search for some sewing materials to make new dance costumes. I went shopping with my close friends and stayed up until very late to cut and sew costumes

At the street

The second week, I visited my grandmother and grandfather. They look older and weaker this year because they are already over 80 years old. I wish they will be healthier and live longer with us.

with my grandfather

I also spent quite some times with my friends, my brother's friends, my mom's students... Everyday was full of parties and drinks. It was so fun.

The third week, my dance students "kidnapped" me. I rarely had dinner at home with my family because I went to teach dancing 2hours every evening. The last 2 days, Sat and Sun, I taught them 3 times a day, morning, afternoon and evening. I felt tired, but their enthusiasm and effort motivated me to teach them. Wish them will get a good result in the coming competition in March!

I came back Malaysia at 10.30pm Monday. I felt like I could take on the world after a long and happy holiday.

I hope you had a good holiday at Xmas, New Year with your family and friends. For my Vietnamese and Chinese friends, Happy Lunar New Year to you and your families. Wish you with many success and happiness!

SUMMARY OF 2006.

SUMMARY OF 2006.

There are only 4 days left; a new year will come to knock on the door of each family in the world. Before the old year comes to an end, I just want to briefly write down some highlights that happened to me in one year: my achievements, my happiness as well as my sadness so that I can look back what I have gone through.

January: the first New Year that I'm away from home, staying inside the house with much sadness and loneliness. I was really homesick so I called my mom. As soon as I heard her voice, I broke down. I cried so much that made her cry too.

February: I was still trying to adjust with the new living environment, new friends, new cultures, and new everything. It was not easy.

March: I was selected to represent my university to join Speaking English competition among some universities. We did a short comedy and I acted as Cinderella. Since then, the nick name Cinderella went with me till now.

April: My first international dancing competition was taken place on 1st April, and I achieved 5th place in Pre Am category (the first time without much experience so the result was not really good as I expected). The second dancesport competition on 4th April brought to me a better result, 2nd runner up in Novice Latin and 5th place in Pre Amateur Latin. However, in this month, there was bad thing happened to me after all competitions, I was kicked out of the house which I have been staying for 1 year, because of the rule and regulations of Muslim owner (they saw me and my partner practicing dancing inside the house, only one time :(

May- June: Semester holiday started, I tried to look for a job to earn more income. I worked as sale promoter in Mid Valley, KL Plaza for like 12 hours a day. It was really tiring but I learnt a lot of things through this job. This was also the second time I had to move out of the house after 1 month because unlucky reason, the owner wanted to take my room and I had no agreement with them before I rented this room. I was stupid and I felt like being cheated :(

July: I joined another dance competition 15th July with another partner, Gary Cheah (his photo below). This time, we won Champion in Latin Beginner C. This prize was my present to him and I hope he really liked it. In this competition, Gary introduced to me one of the adjudicators (Ivy Por). The short chat with her made my life turn into different page. I joined her studio and started teaching there few weeks later on.

August: This month was really terrible to me when all the bad luck happened at the same time. The third time I had to look for a new room to stay because of being cheated by people staying with me. I had no where to stay, no money to rent a new room even for few days to survive, no friend to help me out, no family aside, and especially the guy that I put much love on him left me without any reason. I felt like falling from the heaven to the hell. One week locking myself inside the room, I couldn’t do anything besides crying and crying. At that time, I really wanted to surrender, wanted to throw everything and go back. But each time thinking of my dad’s advice, I didn’t dare to give up. I have to try to overcome it no matter what it took.

September: Early of the month, I tried so hard to solve all the problems one by one and I had no idea how could I do that but I did, like a miracle.

October: I went through 2 more dance competitions with my ex partner (Tommy). This time, we really competed well and won many trophies and certificates. However, few days after competitions, I and my partner were banned to compete together just because the conflict of 2 different dancesport organisations that we went through. We were punished because of not representing Vietnam as well.

November: My birthday. It was a small party that some of my friends and students organised to surprise me. I was really touched and happy.

December: Finishing my final exam so well after almost 2 sleepless weeks, I helped my boss to organise successfully the Christmas party in studio which brought many smiles to all people who joined us. I felt exhausted but satisfied with what I had done. 24th Dec, Christmas day, people were so fun out there to celebrate Xmas, I was alone inside the room, felt missing home so much and kept thinking “perhaps this time, my heart is really frozen” I failed one more time…

Sad midnight, end of the year 2006.

MY 22ND BIRTHDAY

MY 22ND BIRTHDAY

22 years ago on 5th Nov, there was a super cute baby girl said hello to the world. 22 years later, the baby girl now has become a big girl with so many hopes, dreams and ambitions.

Although my birthday passed 2 weeks ago, but this month hasn't ended yet so it's still considered my month, thus I just wanna share with you my 22nd birthday party. Nothing much, except this was the second party in overseas which was really memorable whilst the first one had nobody with me, no flower, no candle, no cake... :(.

Some friends and students gave me a surprise with a birthday cake and celebrating with me in the studio. They were very cheeky when they asked me to take the very small candle stuck in the birthday cake without using hands. I didn't know that's a trap so when I used my mouth to take the candle, they pushed my head into the cake...As a result, my face was full of cream with different colors and I looked like a clown with a big tomato nose. I trusted them.

I also had a very nice and sweet dinner which was unforgettable. So thank you so much and let's share with me some of the photos and enjoy my birthday before it comes to an end. And till we meet next year.

Who can guess what did i wish? :p

With Ivy and other students

When i was picking up the small candle from the cake.....

and that's how it ended.

ARGENTINE TANGO AND CHACHA WORKSHOP

ARGENTINE TANGO AND CHACHA WORKSHOP

I's been quite long time since my last post. I finally have time to update a new entry. This was a dance party that my studio principal, Ivy and I organised. It was a successful event, beyond our expectation. This time, we threw an Argentine Tango dance workshop at our studio. Many people attended so it was quite a blast.

Demonstrating Argentine Tango with Ivy

Students were watching us closely.

I also conducted a Cha cha dance workshop.

Everyone came to the event dressing the appropriate dress code "Black and red", the Argentina theme. We danced, we laughed, we had so much fun. The workshop ended quite late, but I saw a big smile on the student's face. It made me feel really happy.

DANCE COMPETION: BEHIND SMILES

DANCE COMPETION: BEHIND SMILES

The competitions were over a few days ago but it's still hunting me. I still couldn't get over it yet. So many feelings and memories, I just wanna tell a story about the most recent competition which is the 19th Singapore international ballroom championships. The competition took place on 29th Oct however til 27th Oct I couldn't decide whether I should join or not. Actually, I didn't want to join because of many reasons: my finance problem, the conflict between 2 dancesport organisations that I'm joining, etc...

Finally, I forced to go one last time after quarrelling with my partner. He wanted to join, I didn't. But he flew all the way from Vietnam to Kuala Lumpur so that he could bring the achievement "I've made it to compete in overseas" home. I admired him for that. So even I was really not into it, I knew this would be the last time I'd compete with him.

The train from Kuala Lumpur departed at 9.30pm on 28th Oct and arrived in Singapore at 7am on 29th. I couldn't sleep on the train because of the uncomfortable seat and noise. 10hours sitting on the train made me really physically and mentally exhausted. Taking a cab to competition venue after arriving Singapore, we only had 2 hours left to register and prepare for the competition. It seemed not enough time for me to prepare everything as my make up already took at least 1 hour. I had to rush myself but I was still late. When the organiser called out our number, I was busy doing my make up and only could change my costume without any accessories to get ready to compete.

Competition started.

I have never joined any competition as tiring as this one. We competed in Novice (2 dances) and Pre Am latin (3 dances). Each category has 2 heats in the 1st round then semi-final and final round. It was supposed to add another category in between so that the competitors could rest more for the next events. For instance, Novice Latin (1st round) then Standard Novice, Pre Am (1st round). Unfortunately, our both events, Novice and Pre- Am were arranged back to back. So after competing Novice 1st round, we were called for Pre am 1st round shortly. Because the result was released so fast, therefore just finishing Pre Am 1st round, we had to compete in Novice (semi final), Pre Am (semi final), Novice final then Pre Am final as well. Overall, within 20 minutes, we had to dance 15 times repeatedly.

We almost ran out of energy, but we still had to smile in front of so many people and of course the judges. I think some of them must be bored of seeing us so many times. The last dance, I still remember was Jive with quick tempo and a lot of actions. My partner and I couldn't even raise our legs to kick and flick, I couldn't breath as well and was having a cramp cause I was dancing so hard without warming up. The adjudicators were looking at us and I tried to motivate my partner "C'mon, this is the last minutes. We almost done". And finally, we really did it well. Nothing could express my happiness at that time. I felt like i was just escaped from dancing punishment after all. But I knew that, I made it and regardless the result good or bad, I already tried my best. I thought, we would be at 6th place for both events but surprisingly, we got 2nd runner up in Latin novice and 6th place in Pre Am. It was a WOW!...

10pm. I had to rush myself one more time to get train to go back Kuala Lumpur as my partner wanted to watch the competition till the end. So he agreed to let me to go back alone. Trying to hide my disappointment, I left quickly as i didn't want to force him to follow me. I took a cab to railway station. My watch pointed 10.30pm. "The last train just left 10mins" said the station staff. "Damn it!" I said to myself and started thinking what should I do now: staying at station whole night or coming back to find my partner? I decided to return to the competition venue to look for my partner because staying at station seemed not safe for the girl. At that time, we started to search for accommodation. Luckily I could find a hostel to stay around there after 2 hours searching. I was really exhausted, just wanted to sleep but still had to check in and helped him check in too. My partner doesn't know how to speak English. Lastly, we got a place to stay.

Removing make up, arranging stuffs, etc, everything was done, it was 2.30am. I only had 4 hours left to sleep. Worst thing, I still couldn't sleep because a strange house and i felt missing something, I felt insecure. When my phone had no credit, no service, I couldn't contact someone that I need, and they couldn't be in touch with me. Nothing I could do, I was lying down to wait for sunrise and started counting time....

6.30am. We stared packing our luggages and going to the railway station. The train departed at 8.20am, we still had plenty of time to have breakfast and relax. I thought I could be happy and relax after that. But everything was not in a way that I wanted. Problem kept sticking us. My partner was so careless, he left his wallet in the cab with all his money and the suitcase key. Luckily, his passport and train ticket were still with him. I had to look for a key shop to help him open his suitcase but i couldn't help him to find his wallet back as the train departed in time. His face looked so down and hopeless.

We left the wallet in Singapore as a memory. On the train back to K.L, we couldn't say any word, I also couldn't talk anything to him or blame him. Just kept quiet. The atmosphere became so tense and my mood was heavier and heavier. There was nothing to do, I tried to close my eyes for the time being. Only this time, i really could sleep because too tired.

K.L was nearer and nearer....
